    @molly0xfff
    Because people who follow that hashtag are going to see every post in the long thread, instead of just the first (or last) one (which they can click on to see it all if desired).

    "people can mute hashtags" - news to me. You would only need to do that for an account you follow, and if an account you follow is posting lots of long threads then you would just unfollow them to begin with (as a couple of us here have already said we did), and follow the hashtags you do want to see. 🙂

      @SmartmanApps i believe some use hashtags as a way to filter out material from their local timeline (that is, from people they don't necessarily follow), sort of along the lines of content warnings.

        @pluralistic @jorgecandeias @codinghorror I really don't get his problem. I almost *never* read blogs anymore but I love coming across one of your threads and then choosing to read it or skip it. Actually, I dont think I've ever gone to the long-form link you provide, and just stick to my phones mastodon client.

        And... "considered blogging?" Is he that clueless?

            Just keep doing what you're doing in the way you're doing it!

            I subscribe to your RSS feed, but also follow you here. I've got a filter in place to filter out your long threads, but am able to see the comments folks post here in response to your posts. Seeing the replies others post often piques my interest enough to open up my RSS feedreader and read your blog post in its entirety.

            Thanks for your generosity in sharing your insights so freely in this way.

            @juliesbits @codinghorror for iOS users, Tapestry by @Iconfactory is great for reading @pluralistic. I have the RSS of the blog in my timeline that only shows up once, and then I have this filter that works beautifully for filtering out the long threads. This way I get the full blog text, truncated in the timeline, but easy to click on and read, and also all of the comments and re-posts from Cory. The best of both worlds.

              As I've said here before, I:

              * post to scratch my itch, and

              * believe foursquare in your right to both read and post in ways that scratch your itch, and

              * provide the legal and technological means for you to scratch your itch with my posts, but

              * I draw the line at not scratching my itch in order to scratch yours.

              @pluralistic I liked some of the suggestions to make the first post in the thread regular public and the rest of the thread “public quiet”, as well as mastodon clients that will collapse long threads automatically (or to your preference). I apologize for initiating the conversation in this semi-provocative way, but I assure you my goal, as always, is to improve the fediverse experience / open source software for everyone. I’m here to help, have fun, and find allies.

                @codinghorror What's "public quiet?"

                I only know "unlisted" which does nothing to decrease the likelihood that the subsequent posts will appear in TLs but DOES make those posts unsearchable, which sucks - it's all downside, no benefit... to anyone.

                      pluralistic@mamot.fr "public quiet" == "unlisted".

                      The Mastodon team renamed it because people kept incorrectly assuming that unlisted posts were private (they very much are not.)
