Look, Cory, I love you man, but have you considered blogging?
-
If you don't like my feed, but you want to see the things in it that are not threads, why wouldn't you write a bot that ingests my feed, discards the threads, and republishes the rest? The feed is both labeled *and* licensed to permit this.
Surely this is as valid a response to "I have different preference from you" as "therefore you should work in a way I prefer, rather than the way you prefer."
@pluralistic @codinghorror this is indeed a hilariously valid response. But also, I have come to really appreciate the CW labels you've added for your long threads.

@julian @codinghorror @pluralistic
can't the object type "article" be used instead of the object type "note"? isn't that what ghost and wordpress are doing to make writing be AP native?
https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/#object-types
wjmaggos@liberal.city yes that's exactly what I was alluding to. A bunch of talented developers (and me too, tangentially) have been working directly with Evan P. and the Mastodon team to improve handling of long form text.
Mamot.fr does not support that kind of article composition yet, but if they're reasonably up to date they will support other softwares publishing them.
It will even hide long form content behind an expando button, so I think it checks off all of pluralistic@mamot.fr's boxes. That said, if he's happy with the flow who am I to tell him to change?

As I've said here before, I:
* post to scratch my itch, and
* believe foursquare in your right to both read and post in ways that scratch your itch, and
* provide the legal and technological means for you to scratch your itch with my posts, but
* I draw the line at not scratching my itch in order to scratch yours.
@pluralistic @codinghorror I've come to believe some folks around here just find you way too itchy.

I explain here why I'm on this particular server:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/16/how-to-make-the-least-worst-mastodon-threads/
@pluralistic @julian @codinghorror
Thanks for (re-)sharing the explanation on why you're on that particular server; I wondered about that.
Though I primarily read your blog posts on @medium, I'm glad to follow you on Mastodon because unlike many popular writers, you frequently engage with people in your comments and share posts by others, even randos like myself.

@phillycodehound @pluralistic @julian I created a list called Cory with only 1 member. Keeps it out of my Home timeline.
@EdBruce @phillycodehound @pluralistic @julian that's a nice trick! I just did the same and additionally added https://pluralistic.net/ to my RSS reader so I don't miss any blog post.

@zersiax @codinghorror
Yeah same. The other annoying thing is when people put the same hashtags in every single post in the thread, instead of just the first/last post, to the degree that I made a meme for it when people do that@SmartmanApps wait why is this bad? i thought this was recommended so that people can mute hashtags

@jorgecandeias @codinghorror Sounds like those people shouldn't be following me!

@jorgecandeias @codinghorror Sounds like those people shouldn't be following me!
@pluralistic @codinghorror I honestly don't get their problem.
And I say this as someone who basically ignores your threads. I just use them to find the start and the direct link to the blog post, where I read your stuff if and when I've got the time.
It's not as if scrolling up or down for a while was such a huge load of work. Some finger swapping or mouse wheel action and it's done...

Here is a detailed explanation of how and why I use Mastodon, how to follow me and other thread posters by configuring your own filters, where to get my material on other surfaces or in machine readable form, Etc. if you don't like threads, I encourage you to unfollow me and get my work in some other way. https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/16/how-to-make-the-least-worst-mastodon-threads/
Just keep doing what you're doing in the way you're doing it!
I subscribe to your RSS feed, but also follow you here. I've got a filter in place to filter out your long threads, but am able to see the comments folks post here in response to your posts. Seeing the replies others post often piques my interest enough to open up my RSS feedreader and read your blog post in its entirety.
Thanks for your generosity in sharing your insights so freely in this way.

@molly0xfff
Because people who follow that hashtag are going to see every post in the long thread, instead of just the first (or last) one (which they can click on to see it all if desired)."people can mute hashtags" - news to me. You would only need to do that for an account you follow, and if an account you follow is posting lots of long threads then you would just unfollow them to begin with (as a couple of us here have already said we did), and follow the hashtags you do want to see.

@SmartmanApps i believe some use hashtags as a way to filter out material from their local timeline (that is, from people they don't necessarily follow), sort of along the lines of content warnings.

@pluralistic @jorgecandeias @codinghorror I really don't get his problem. I almost *never* read blogs anymore but I love coming across one of your threads and then choosing to read it or skip it. Actually, I dont think I've ever gone to the long-form link you provide, and just stick to my phones mastodon client.
And... "considered blogging?" Is he that clueless?

@juliesbits @codinghorror for iOS users, Tapestry by @Iconfactory is great for reading @pluralistic. I have the RSS of the blog in my timeline that only shows up once, and then I have this filter that works beautifully for filtering out the long threads. This way I get the full blog text, truncated in the timeline, but easy to click on and read, and also all of the comments and re-posts from Cory. The best of both worlds.

@pluralistic I liked some of the suggestions to make the first post in the thread regular public and the rest of the thread “public quiet”, as well as mastodon clients that will collapse long threads automatically (or to your preference). I apologize for initiating the conversation in this semi-provocative way, but I assure you my goal, as always, is to improve the fediverse experience / open source software for everyone. I’m here to help, have fun, and find allies.

@codinghorror What's "public quiet?"
I only know "unlisted" which does nothing to decrease the likelihood that the subsequent posts will appear in TLs but DOES make those posts unsearchable, which sucks - it's all downside, no benefit... to anyone.

pluralistic@mamot.fr "public quiet" == "unlisted".
The Mastodon team renamed it because people kept incorrectly assuming that unlisted posts were private (they very much are not.)
