    I love the idea of local governments having Fedi accounts. It sounds silly, but the idea of a bunch of local departments being able to get their messages out can actually be really useful. Think about how many municipal accounts post updates on Twitter to keep people informed about local events or developments.

      @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org
      Every municipality should run their own Fedi server. For less than $10 a month any muni can stand up a
      #Sharkey server and branded to the city/ county/ town/ etc's branding, and granting accounts to each department/ elected official.

        deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org as someone who doesn't use X/Twitter it is depressing how often I read news stories that begin with "as announced on X"...

          @gme@bofh.social I agree. I think the hard part is just developing a coherent strategy: establishing why municipalities should do this, helping them with setup and onboarding, training people and teams to use the thing, and maintenance.

            deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org @gme@bofh.social I am thinking we can get a way in with local digital news orgs that are springing up to replace local papers that have shuttered.

            Having a social media presence could be a logical next step! It also ticks the hyper local box.

                @julian @deadsuperhero @gme

                govts and news outlets should be leading the way. they both should care a lot about not having anybody between them and their constituents/consumers. and then they are both in a great position to push the public to join up.

                  @julian @deadsuperhero sometimes it's helpful to point to others who have blazed the trail and reassure people they are not first movers.

                  in case you need to refer to those who have already done this: https://jaz.co.uk/projects/orgs-using-ap/

                    jaz@toot.wales this is a fantastic resource. I'll be using it when I reach out to those local news orgs!
